Calvary Flora McDonald - Aged Care Facility

Concept Collections was engaged to provide furniture solutions for Calvary Flora McDonald Aged Care in Cowandilla, South Australia, with a focus on resident comfort, safety, accessibility and long-term durability in a healthcare environment.

The furniture selection was carefully considered against Calvary's aged care design requirements to support resident wellbeing, independence and ease of use within communal dining and lounge areas.

Seating Designed for Comfort and Accessibility

The Alanna Armchair was selected as the primary dining chair due to its supportive design and suitability for aged care applications.

Key features include:

  • Seat height: 475mm, within Calvary's preferred range of 450-480mm to support comfortable seating and standing.
  • Arm height: 660mm from floor level, providing strong support for residents when transitioning between sitting and standing.
  • Seat depth: 450mm, promoting upright posture while maintaining comfort during extended use.
  • Clear width between armrests: 510mm, allowing accommodation for a range of users while maintaining a supportive seating position.
  • Fully welded aluminium frame, delivering exceptional strength, stability and long-term durability.

The Alanna chairs have been custom upholstered in Warwick Lustrell Charisma vinyl, a commercial healthcare-grade upholstery specifically suited to aged care and healthcare environments.

Healthcare-Grade Upholstery

The selected upholstery offers:

  • Washable and easy-care surfaces
  • Stain-resistant performance
  • Antimicrobial HealthGuard protection
  • Bleach-cleanable properties
  • Excellent durability for high-use healthcare environments
  • Minimal seam construction for improved hygiene

Alternative healthcare fabric options, including Warwick's Tritan-treated waterproof ranges, are available where additional infection-control requirements apply.

Lounge Seating

The project also includes custom upholstered Wembley Sofas and Armchairs, creating comfortable and inviting communal spaces for residents, visitors and staff.

The upholstery selections were made to complement the interior design scheme while allowing Calvary's team flexibility to select colour combinations that achieve clear contrast against surrounding floor and wall finishes, improving visibility and wayfinding for residents.

Custom Dining and Activity Tables

Custom-manufactured dining tables were supplied using:

  • Custom Tasmanian Oak tabletops stained Wenge with radius corners
  • Glasgow table bases

Table heights were designed to align with aged care seating requirements, with finished table heights generally falling within the preferred range for dining and activity use.

The table designs provide:

  • Appropriate wheelchair access and mobility aid clearance
  • Durable commercial-grade construction
  • Easy-clean surfaces suitable for everyday healthcare environments

Where required, custom-manufactured tabletops can be produced with radius corners to further enhance safety and reduce impact risks.

Outdoor Furniture

The project also included outdoor furniture comprising custom Compact Laminate tabletops in Prime Oak, paired with White Henley table bases and vibrant Dolce Armchairs in Orange, Green and Anthracite, creating welcoming and practical outdoor spaces for residents, visitors and staff to enjoy.

Supporting Safe Resident Movement

Furniture layouts were developed in accordance with Calvary's circulation requirements, maintaining clear pathways and adequate space around furniture to support:

  • Walking frames
  • Wheelchairs
  • Mobility scooters
  • Staff assistance and resident movement

Outcome

The completed furniture package delivers a balance of comfort, functionality, durability and aesthetic appeal, creating welcoming dining and lounge environments that support the daily needs of residents while meeting the operational requirements of an aged care facility.
